A ball pit for babies is one of the most popular play ideas for the first few years of life – and rightly so: Diving into hundreds of colorful balls develops motor skills, balance, sense of touch, and color perception, and it's simply a lot of fun. To ensure that the fun doesn't turn into a safety hazard, however, the right balls are essential. Euro-Matic has been producing hollow plastic spheres for over 60 years and supplies ball pit balls to indoor playgrounds, daycare centers, therapy facilities, and manufacturers, among others. Here are the most important answers. Download our exclusive guide here on what to consider when choosing a ball pit for babies.
From what age is a ball pit suitable for babies?
Once a child can sit up securely on their own – usually between 8 and 10 months of age – they can use a ball pit under supervision. Before that, they lack the necessary core stability to hold themselves up in the bouncy balls. For very young children, a shallowly filled ball pit is recommended: the balls should only surround the sitting child up to their hips, not their chest. Important at any age: babies and toddlers should never be left unattended in a ball pit.
What ball size is the right one?
Ball size is the most important safety factor. The standard for ball pits is a diameter of 7 cm – large enough to prevent swallowing and small enough to remain light and easy to grasp. For babies and toddlers: keep away from smaller balls from the craft or decoration section. Anything that fits through the small parts cylinder (a type of small parts cylinder) is unsuitable for children under three years old. Larger balls with a diameter of 8 cm are occasionally used when a particularly gentle, shallower sinking is desired.
Materials and certification marks: what to look out for.
Ball pit balls for babies should meet the following requirements:
- High-quality plastic (polyethylene): Soft enough to give way, but dimensionally stable and break-resistant – splintering balls with sharp edges are a real risk of injury.
- Seam quality: no protruding burrs or sharp edges on the weld seam.
- Free from harmful substances: No plasticizers (phthalates), no heavy metals in the color pigments.
- Certified safety: Balls should comply with the European toy standard EN 71. TÜV-tested balls offer additional safety.
- color fastness: The color must not rub off when licked or sweated.
- Recyclable: High-quality polyethylene can be recycled into pure types at the end of its life.
Euro-Matic's ball pit balls are TÜV-certified and made from high-quality plastic using the blow molding process – seam-stable, dimensionally stable and available in a wide range of colors.

How many balls does a baby ball pit need?
The quantity depends on the base area and the desired fill level. As a rule of thumb: For every square meter of base area and 10 cm of fill level, you will need approximately 250 to 300 balls with a 7 cm diameter. For babies, a fill level of 10 to 15 cm is perfectly sufficient.
Practical examples:
- Small play tent / pop-up pool (approx. 1 m²), 10 cm high: approximately 250–300 balls
- Playpen (approx. 1,5 m²), 15 cm high: approximately 550–650 balls
- Small playroom pool (2 m²), 20 cm high: approximately 1.000–1.200 balls
It's better to be a little more generous with the amount of space: A ball pit that is too sparsely filled quickly loses its appeal because the balls roll to the edge and the child sits on the hard floor.
Hygiene: Keep ball pits clean
Hygiene is crucial, especially for babies who put everything in their mouths. High-quality hollow polyethylene spheres have a smooth, closed surface – dirt doesn't adhere well and is easy to remove.
- Check regularly: Remove crumbs, hair, and small items from the basin.
- Cleaning: Balls can be washed with warm water and mild detergent. For smaller quantities, a laundry bag can also be used in the washing machine on a gentle cycle at a low temperature.
- Vollständig trocknen lassen, before the balls are returned to the pool.
- Sort out damaged balls: Remove any dented or torn balls immediately.
- Rhythm: In private households, a thorough cleaning every few weeks is usually sufficient; in daycare centers and public facilities, it is needed much more frequently.
Why ball pits are good for development
A ball pit is a sensory paradise for babies: the balls give way, roll away, make noises, are colorful, and easy to grasp. Children practice balance and core muscles, hand-eye coordination, grasping and releasing movements, proprioception, and cause-and-effect understanding. Therefore, ball pits are specifically used in occupational and physical therapy for sensory integration.
